WWII 1944 - ETO
WWII 1944 was a significant turning point in the war in Western Europe.
In southern Europe the Allies were in Italy, took Anzio and even landed in southern France. In western Europe the Allies we building up for the invasion across the channel to France. This invasion, Operation Overlord, which became forever known as D-Day occurred on 6 June 1944 and was landed on the beaches of Normandy France. The Germans suspected that the landings would come at the Pas-de-Calais, which was the closest point from French soil to England across the English Channel. However, the Americans, British , Canadians and other allies surprised the Germans at Normandy where they named landing beaches or sectors as: Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha Beaches.
The allies had broken out of the Normandy Beachhead and by late August had liberated Paris and moved swiftly across western europe. In September 1944 they conducted Operation Market Garden an airborne assault calculated to end the war by Christmas. Unfortunately it failed. The Allies pushed all the way into Germany before Christmas, but it was in mid-December that the Germans would launch their last large counter offensive in the Ardennes Forest. It would become known as the Battle of the Bulge with the town of Bastogne completely surrounded and it would take until the next year before the allies would regain all the land they had lost.
