90th Infantry Division
The 90th Infantry Division was activated 25 March 1942, shipped out to Europe on 23rd March 1944 and arrived in England on 5 April 1944. Some elements of the 90th saw action on 6 June 1944, D-Day, Utah Beach, Normandy, France. The rest of the Division entered combat 10 June.
The Division was immediately thrust into the fighting; cut across the Merderet and took Pont l'Abbe. In July they cleared Foret de Mont-Castre, known as Hill 122 and on the 27th they took Periers.
In August, the 90th crossed the Sarthe and was in the midst of the closing of the Falaise Gap. September they crossed France via Verdun and began the participation in the battle for Metz. Following the fall of Metz, the Division crossed the Moselle River at Koeningsmacker in early November.
By early December the Division had crossed the Saar River north of Saarlautern. When the German Ardennes Offensive began, the 90th Division setup in a defensive posture until early January, when they returned to the offensive. In February, they breached the Siegfried Line and continued across the Moselle to take Mainz in late March. They continued the advance, crossing the Rhine, Main and Werra rivers and moving to the Czech border. The 90th Infantry Division was en route to Prague when the VE Day ended World War II.
