83rd Infantry Division
The 83rd Infantry Division was activated on 15 August 1942. They left for Europe on 6 April arriving in England on 16 April 1944. The Division landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on 18 June 1944 after the D-Day Invasion and the Allies had secured the Beachhead.
Immediately into the battle of the hedgerows the 83rd fought South of Carentan and reached the St. Lo-Periers road in late July. August and September found the Division in Dinard, St. Malo, St. Servan and locations along the Loire River including Beaugency.
The 83rd then moved along the Moselle and advanced to the Siegfried line across the Sauer River. November and December found the them in the Hurtgen Forest moving toward the Roer.
With the German Ardennes Offensive, the 83rd found themselves near Rochefort as the Battle of the Bulge ensued until the end of January. In March, they resumed offensive activity advancing toward the Rhine crossing on the 29th. April had the 83d Infantry Division advancing to the Elbe when World War II in Europe ended.
