80th Infantry Division
The 80th Infantry Division, activated on 15 July 1942, went to Europe on 1 July 1944 for World War II, ETO Combat. The Division landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, France 3 August 1944. They were inserted into the line immediately engaging the Germans in Evron, Ste. Suzanne, Argentan. They were also active in the Falaise Pocket.
Assigned to Third Army the 80th Division moved swiftly across France to the Seille River. November found them in the Saar Basin and December found them attacking the Siegfried Line.
When the Germans began their Ardennes Offensive, the 80th moved north to Luxembourg slamming into the German lines Southeast of Bastogne where heavy fighting continued unto the spring. By February the Battle of the Bulge was over and the Division and the rest of the Allies were back on the on the offensive, with the 80th breaking through the Siegfried line and then crossing the Rhine at the end of March.
In April, the 80th Division had captured Kassel, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena and Gera. They then moved to Regensburg at the end of the month. The 80th Infantry Division was on the Enns River when V-E Day arrived.
