4th Infantry Division

The 4th Infantry Division was organized at Camp Greene, North Carolina on 10 December 1917 under the command of Major General George H. Cameron.

World War II

4th Infantry Division was reactivated on 1 June 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia. The Fourth Division arrived in the Great Britain in early 1944 during the buildup and rehearsals for Operation Overlord, the Invasion of Normandy. The 4th landed at Utah Beach, with the 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Division being the first surface-borne Allied unit to hit the beaches at on D-Day, 6 June 1944.

The 4th relieved the 82d Airborne Division at Sainte-Mère-Église, cleared the Cotentin peninsula and took part in the capture of Cherbourg on 25 June. After taking part in the fighting near Periers, France on 612 of July, the division broke through the left flank of the German Seventh Army, helping stem the German drive toward Avranches.

By the end of August The 4th had moved on to the liberation of Paris. Then followed movements into Belgium to attack the Siegfried Line. By November the division was fighting in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest and in December was in Luxembourg facing the German Ardennes Offensive, also known as the Battle of the Bulge. When the Allies were back on the offensive in early 1945, the 4th Infantry Division was very active during this time, crossing the Rhine in late March and was moving through Bavaria when the Germans surrendered in May.
