44th Infantry Division
The 44th Division was a unit of the Army National Guard from 1920 to 1945. Upon activation into federal service on 15 September 1940, they trained and finally arrived in the ETO exactly four years later 15 September 1944. They were assigned to XV Corps and attached to 7th Army on 17 October 1944 where first units of the 44th entered combat for the first time. By 24 October the entire Division was in combat.
The first command post was located near St-Germain-de-Tournebut, France. and as the 44th moved across the european continent so did HQ from Luneville, to Croismare, Veho, Avricourt, Heming, Sarrebourg, Lixheim, Drulingen, Diemeringen, Montbronn, Siltzheim and Herbitzheim France on the 24th of December 1944. HQ was located in Herbitzheim the longest of any period remaining there until the 25th of March when they setup their first command in Germany's Rhineland region at Munchof. The 44th Division crossed the Rhine River on the 26th. Combat continued for the men through the Baden, Bavaria and Wurttemberg regions of Germany and at the end of hostilities they were in the Tyrol region of Austria.
