1st Infantry Division InsigniaThis is a DVD of the 1st Infantry Division, also known as 'Big Red One', one of only 4 American Infantry Divisions to be used in the initial invasion of France on June 6th 1944. The division would hold the responsibility of invading an Omaha Beach sector on one of the bloodiest days in American history.

1st Infantry Division History on Film

This Invasion of Normandy film shows the actions of the men of the 1st Infantry Division as recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Photo Companies, during the historic operation of the Normandy landings that started on D-Day, 6 June 1944. Combat Reels has researched and compiled all of this raw combat film footage, then reformatted it into the DVD format for your viewing pleasure.

The military history footage in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 1st Infantry Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined. This video contains 35 Chapters of footage covering the time from February 1944, to the middle of August 1944.

1st Infantry Division DVD Highlights

  • Training for the D-Day Invasion at Wolcombe, England.
  • Men of the 1st are seen receiving monthly pay and lining up for a hot meal.
  • Then, D-Day, see the men doing calisthenics, loading equipment and vehicles into invasion craft.
  • Coming ashore under fire at Omaha Beach.
  • Wounded men rest against the sea wall.
  • Captured German POWs are marched under control of the men of the 1st Division.
  • Men of the 1st liberate small towns they celebrate with the French civilians.
  • General Eisenhower visits the Commanding General of the 1st Division, General Heubner, and presents decorations to the men.
  • Ike looks over some tactical maps.
  • German POWs are searched and processed by men of the 1st as medics take care of the wounded.
  • As the Americans breakthrough the German lines during Operation Cobra, troops of the 1st ride along with a 3rd Armored Division thrust through Marigny to Coutances and Gavray.
  • The 1st Division liberates the town of Le Ferte Macy, on the southern edge of the 'Falaise Gap'.
