General Walter Bedel Smith
General Walter Bedell Smith was Dwight Eisenhower's chief of staff from the Tunisian Campaign in 1942-1943 through the end of the war in Europe in 1945. Born 5 October 1895, died 9 August 1961, Walter, nicknamed Beetle began his career in the military in 1911 when he enlisted in the Indiana National Guard. He had become an officer and served in World War I in 1917-1918. As Ike's right hand man, Beetle, was closely involved with all preparations, planning and execution of three invasions and campaigns: Tunisia, Italy and Normandy.
LT. GEN. WALTER BEDELL SMITH was assistant secretary of the General Staff in October 1939. He became Secretary, General Staff, in September 1941. In February 1942 he was named U.S. secretary of the Combined Chiefs of Staff and secretary of the Joint Board. General Eisenhower chose him in September 1942 to be chief of staff of the European Theater of Operations. Later he became chief of staff of the Allied forces in North Africa and of the Mediterranean theater. At the end of 1943, he became chief of staff of SHAEF.
