General Lewis Brereton

General Lewis Hyde Brereton

General Brereton was born on June 21, 1890. He died July 20, 1967. In World War II, Brereton held a number of commands. He first began in the Pacific Theater, then in 1942 moved to command the 9th Air Force in North Africa. He continued with the 9th AF when it was transferred to England and became the tactical support for the 8th AF in October 1943. In 1944, he assumed command of the First Allied Airborne Army following the D-Day invasion and held this position until the end of the war in Europe.

LT. GEN. LEWIS H. BRERETON graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1907, transferred to the Army in 1911, and in turn transferred to the flying section of the Signal Corps in 1912. He was a flier in Europe in World War I. In July 1941, General Brereton was given command of the Third Air Force. When war broke out, he was the commanding general of the Far East Air Force in the Philippine Islands. At the beginning of 1942 he became Deputy. Air Commander in Chief, Allied Air Forces, on the staff of General Wavell besides serving as commander of the Fifth Air Force. General Brereton organized and commanded the Tenth Air Force in India in March 1942. Two months later he became commander of the Middle East Air Force. In February 1943 he assumed in addition the command of U .S. Army Forces in the Middle East. In October 1943 he was transferred to the United Kingdom where he became commanding general of the Ninth Air Force. He was appointed commander in chief of the First Allied Airborne Army in August 1944.
