U.S. Third Army
In World War II the U.S. Third Army was initially under the command of Courtney Hodges in 1943 and early 1944. Third Army was sent from the US to Britain in December of 1943. 3rd Army did not participate in the Normandy Landings of D-Day. However, on 1 August 1944 it was established in the field in France. A number of divisions of the First Army were reassigned to the 3rd Army such as the 90th Infantry Division and along with new Divisions that had come onto the European Continent such as the 4th Armored Division and led by General George Patton they charged eastward across France to the German Frontier before the end of 1944.
