U.S. First Army
The US First Army was in command of the US Assault divisions of the Normandy D-Day invasion. 1st Army arrived in England in 1943 to begin preparation for operation Overlord, the military name for the D-day invasion scheduled for the summer of 1944. General Omar Bradley was in command of 1st Army and under his command were the US 1st Division, 29th Division and 2nd Infantry Division that landed at Omaha Beach and the 4th Division, 90th Division and 9th Infantry Division that landed at Utah Beach. Also under this command were the 82nd Airborne Division and 101st Airborne Division. Additional units would land including the 3rd Armored and 4th Armored Divisions following the initial landings and come under command of the 1st Army until 1 August when Third Army was established and taking some of these units.
